Indian Grandmaster Gukesh created history on Thursday (December 12) in Singapore by winning the 2024 Chess World Championship after securing victory in the 14th and final game to seal a dramatic 7.5-6.5 victory in a clash that will be remembered for ages.
With scores level coming into the final game of classical chess, the two players had all to play in the last match with no margin for error. Although the match looked set to end in a draw, Gukesh's resilience paid off as Ding made a huge blunder in the 55th move.
Aged 18, Gukesh is the 18th world champion in history. He is the youngest world champion in history and only the second Indian after Viswanathan Anand to win the elusive crown.
Gukesh Calls Mother After Historic Win
As soon left the venue and travelled back his hotel, a viral video (shared by Chess Base India) has emerged of the 18-year-old calling his mother. Sitting in the car, the newly crowned world champion broke down in tears as he talked on a phone call.
Gukesh's father was present with him in Singapore and his reaction to the triumph took the internet by storm. The duo shared a heartfelt embrace outside the venue.
Who Are Gukesh's Parent?
Gukesh's father, Dr. Rajnikanth, is an ENT (ear, nose, throat) surgeon, while his mother, Dr. Padma, is a microbiologist.
Gukesh's historic triumph marks an incredible year for chess in India as they won a gold medal in the Chess Olympiad for the first time in the competition's 100-year-old history as they swept both the Open and Women's titles.
Earlier this year, Gukesh had also become the youngest player to win the Candidates Tournament, which saw him earn the right to face Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship. No Indian apart from Vishwanathan Anand had also won the title previously.
