Jasprit Bumrah has been India's flagbearer in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian vice-captain has led the bowling unit with utmost precision and is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series.
Bumrah's supreme consistency hasn't deterred Travis Head from establishing his authority against India. The 30-year-old has been in top-notch form registering two centuries in the ongoing Test series.
Head nullified Bumrah's magic in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup final and he has proved to be the thorn on India's road to the World Test Championship final again. With the series tied at 1-1, all eyes will be on Head who reportedly has to prove his fitness for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
Former Indian head coach Greg Chappell believes unlike other Australian batters, Head has tackled Bumrah's threat perfectly and managed to disrupt his rhythm. In his column on Sydney Morning Herald, he wrote, “Head’s performances against Jasprit Bumrah in this series exemplify his fearless approach.
“While most batsmen struggle to survive Bumrah’s unorthodox action, sharp pace, and relentless accuracy, Head has treated him like any other bowler."
“By playing with intent and looking to score off Bumrah, Head has not only nullified his threat but disrupted his rhythm. His ability to dispatch short deliveries with authority and drive fuller ones with precision has been remarkable, underscoring the strides he has made."
If Head is not fit for the MCG for the Boxing Day Test, it will leave Australia in a position of danger. Steve Smith returned to form with a sublime century in Brisbane but the likes of Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne have struggled to get into the rhythm.
Australia dropped Nathan McSweeney from the squad and included 19-year-old Sam Konstas who will make his debut at the MCG.
