The 18-year-old D Gukesh created history on the night of January 12 (Thusday) when he defeated reigning World Champion Ding Liren to become the youngest person to become World Chess Champion. This was obviously a massive moment for the young Indian grandmaster, as he struggled to hold back his emotions after achieving this historic feat.
As the deciding Game 14 reached its final moments, D Gukesh could not hold back his emotions as tears of joy rolled down his cheeks. This was after he knew that he was going to win the game after Ding made a massive blunder in the 53rd move of the game.

The match between D Gukesh and Ding Liren was one for the ages as the game looked set to head into the tiebreak. After the 13th game, both were tied at 6.5 points each as the match headed for the 14th game which was the decider. Both competitors were heading for a tiebreak, especially when Gukesh decided to extend the endgame. Many experts including Vishwanathan Anand predicted that the match would end in a draw.
However, the match finally turned in D Gukesh's favour, when DIng Liren committed a massive blunder in the 55th move of the game. This led to Gukesh winning the match, as Liren conceded.
The contest was one for the ages. The contest began wth Gukesh on the backfoot, after after Ding won the first match and sealed a draw in the second. Gukesh made a strong comeback to win the third match before the two players played seven consecutive draws. Gukesh then won the 11th game, before Ding sealed a strong comeback to win the 12th game. After drawing the 13th game, Gukesh finally won the deciding 14th game.
Gukesh became the youngest World Chess Champion at just 18 years old. He broke the record of Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen, both of whom won their first World Championships at 22 years of age. He also became the second Indian to win the title after the legendary Vishwanathan Anand.
