  • Inglis scored a century on Test debut
  • Inglis reached the milestone in just 90 balls
Josh Inglis completed a record-breaking debut for Australia in Test cricket after scoring a century in just 90 balls during the second day of play in the first Test at the Galle Cricket Stadium as the visitors enjoyed a dream outing with the bat after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.
Heading into the series in Sri Lanka, Australia made a bold move to promote Travis Head to open the batting from his settled number five spot due to his success in the sub-continent during the tour of India in 2023. This meant Sam Konstas was dropped from the side, and Inglis took the vacant middle-order spot and played as a specialist batter with regular keeper Alex Carey keeping the gloves.

Josh Inglis Creates History

Walking out to bat after a 266-run partnership for the third wicket between Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja, Inglis added to Sri Lanka's woes. The 29-year-old became the third Australian batter to score a century as they crossed the three-figure mark.
Inglis wrote his name in the history books by becoming the second-quickest centurion on a Test debut after Shikhar Dhawan, who hit an 85-ball ton against Australia in 2013 at the Punjab Cricket Assocation (PCA) Stadium in Mohali. Inglis is the first Test debutant after Dhawan to reach the three-figure mark in 90 or less balls. Only four players in history have completed the milestone in less than 100 balls on their maiden Test appearance.

Fastest Centuries On Test Debut

Player Opponent Balls To Century Ground Year
Shikhar Dhawan (India) Australia 85 Mohali 2013
Josh Inglis (Australia) Sri Lanka 90 Galle 2025
Dwayne Smith (West Indies) South Africa 93 Cape Town 2004
Prithvi Shaw (India) West Indies 99 Hyderabad 2018
Inglis is also the first Australian to score a century on Test debut in 10 years after Adam Voges (vs West Indies in 2015).
As far as Inglis is concerned, he is a vital part of Australia's white-ball teams and was part of Australia's 2021 T20 World Cup-winning side but did not play any match, while his T20I debut came only a year later. He played a key role in helping Australia win the 2023 Cricket World Cup and featured in 10 of the 11 matches that the Men in Yellow played in the tournament, including the semi-final and final.
Talking about the match, Usman Khawaja's double ton (232) and Steve Smith's 35th century (141) helped Australia cross the 600-run mark. Earlier, Head gave them a quick-fire start with a knock of 57 in just 40 balls.
Smith is leading the side as Pat Cummins is absent due to personal reasons. Australia is already assured of a place in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final, where they will face South Africa from June 11 at Lord's in a bid to win back-to-back titles. He captained the national team one ODI and three T20Is against Pakistan in November last year.
Inglis will play for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL)
