Usman Khawaja notched up his maiden double hundred in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Khawaja came into the Test after a poor series against India back home, however, he looked in total control against Sri Lanka. Khawaja's double ton along with Steve Smith's 35th Test century put Australia on top. The visitors reached 475-3 at Lunch on Day 2, with Khawaja unbeaten on 204.
The double hundred was special as Khawaja became the first Australian to score a double hundred in Sri Lanka. The record for the highest score by an Australian in Sri Lanka was previously held by Justin Langer who scored 166 at Colombo.

Earlier, Steve Smith shattered a plethora of records en route to his 35th Test hundred on Day 1. He also joined the elite list of players to score 10000 runs in Test cricket. Smith became the second-fastest Australian after Ricky Ponting and fourth overall to reach the landmark. He also became just the sixth player to reach the landmark while leading a team. Smith was named captain of the side after Pat Cummins pulled out of the series.
Meanwhile, Australia will be looking to win the series in Sri Lanka for the first time in 14 years. They ended a 10-year wait for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and look set to end the Sri Lanka drought as well. The team has already qualified for the WTC final after beating India 3-1 in the series and the result of the Sri Lanka tour will have no effect on the finalists. South Africa and Australia will clash for the WTC title from June 11 at Lord's.
