The seconf round of the Ranji Trophy 2024/25 season has begun, with the clash between Delhi and Saurashtra in Rajkot being one of the biggest encounters. This is also the first round of Ranji Trophy matches that are taking place after the BCCI passed a disktat for all players to participate the premier domestic tournament to be considered for selection in Tests. Hence, there are some big Team India players who are part of the match. Rishabh Pant is a huge name that is in the Delhi playing XI.However, despite being the senior pro of the side, the star wicketkeeper-batter is not the captain.
Rishabh Pant was being considered to be the captain of the Delhi team by Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) officials. However, the 27-year-old star informed the board that he does not want to be the captain, and the current captain Ayush Badoni must continue in his role. This is because Badoni might have had his own set of ideas, and knows the players much better than Pant.
“He was offered the captaincy but declined, suggesting that Badoni should continue as skipper. He believed it wouldn't be right to step in as captain solely based on his experience as an international and an IPL franchise skipper. He felt that his entry as captain might disrupt the team's balance. Instead, he expressed confidence in the current captain and coach (Sarandeep Singh), to carry forward their vision envisioned at the start of the season,” a source informed Cricbuzz.
Rishabh Pant Fails On Ranji Trophy Return
Rishabh Pant did not make an impact as he retuned to play the Ranji Trophy after 8 years. He last played a match in 2017 against Vidarbha. The star wicketkeeper-batter scored just 1 runs from 10 balls.
Ayush Badoni and Yash Dhull have been the stars with the bat for Delhi. The away side has scored 159/6 after 39 overs. Captain Badoni has slammed a half-century.
