Australia leg-spinner Tom O'Connell became the latest victim of the timed-out rule as he had to go back after being late to take the strike during a game of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League in Mirpur. Playing for the Chittagong Kings against the Khulna Tigers at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, he was timed out, then called back, only to be dismissed in the very first delivery he faced.
The Tigers posted a whopping 203 batting first, riding on the fifties from William Bosisto and Mahidul Islam Ankon. Then their bowling attack inflicted a collapse in the powerplay as the Chittagong Kings lost five wickets in seven overs.
After Haider Ali was dismissed by compatriot Mohammad Nawaz for a two-ball duck, Connell was supposed to join Shamim Hossain in the middle, but he took a lot of time to come in. Watch the video here:
As O'Connell ran through the ground, umpires Raveendra Wimalasiri and Tanveer Ahmed were seen chatting with Tigers skipper Miraz, who at one point even lifted one of their watches to signal it was getting late.
According to MCC's law book, after the fall of a wicket, the incoming batter must, unless time has been called, be ready to receive the delivery, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next delivery within three minutes of the dismissal.
Miraz, who was part of the Shakib Al Hasan-led Bangladesh side that had appealed for a time-out of Angelo Mathews at the ODI World Cup last year, however, retracted his appeal.
But the worst was yet to happen for O'Connell. On the first ball he faced from Nawaz, he holed out to Miraz to bring an end to his short stay.
Bangladesh allrounder Abu Hider's four-wicket haul meant that the Kings were bowled out for 166 as the Tigers won by 37 runs.
