Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas were involved in a fierce staredown after the pacer dismissed Usman Khawaja on the final ball of Day 1. What was also noticeable was how the incident pumped up the entire Indian team, even as Bumrah and Konstas were involved in the tense exchange.

It all happened when Konstas and Bumrah had a go at each other in the second last ball of the day, with the 19-year-old Australian in no mood to back off. But it culminated with the Indian captain dismissing the southpaw, followed by a chilling stare directed at Konstas, leaving no doubt about the intensity of the contest.

The Indian team also rallied around their newly named skipper, and the picture was equally telling. Konstas was walking off quietly towards the dressing room, and almost all the 11 Indian fielders were celebrating in his ears.

Meanwhile, Australia reached 9/1 at stumps after bowling out India for 185 on the opening day of the fifth and final Test.

India, who recovered from 57/3 to 107/4 at tea, lost the remaining six wickets for 78 runs in the final session.

Rishabh Pant (40 off 98) top-scored for India, while Scott Boland (4/31) was the pick of the Australia bowlers.

In response, Australia ended the day at nine for one as Jasprit Bumrah removed Usman Khawaja off the last ball of the day.

India captain Rohit Sharma rested himself from the series finale with Bumrah walking out for the toss in his place.
