Isa Guha has apologised for his comments on Jasprit Bumrah during the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane. The former English cricketer used the word 'Primate’ while praising Bumrah for another superior performance with the ball.
Primate can be interpreted as a racially sensitive word and it did draw some criticism, especially, as Guha's roots hail from India. While responding to Brett Lee's comments on Fox Sports Isa had said, “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? “Most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah.”
Isa's parents incidentally are from Kolkata. She took to the live coverage and said, “Yesterday in commentary I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways,” she said. “Firstly, I’d like to apologise for any offence caused. I set myself really high standards when it comes to empathy and respect for others.
“If you listen to the full transcript, I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players and someone I admire greatly as well. I am an advocate for equality and is someone who has spent their career thinking about inclusion and understanding in the game. I am trying to frame the enormity of his achievements and I’ve chosen the wrong word. For that I’m deeply sorry.
“As someone of South Asian heritage I hope people would recognise that there was no other intention or malice there. I hope it hasn’t overshadowed what has been a great Test match so far. And I look forward to seeing how it progresses. Once again, I am really, really sorry.”
Coming to the match Australia ended the first innings with 445 runs riding on two centuries from Steve Smith and Travis Head. It proved to be a difficult start for India as the visitors lost Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill very early in the innings and they will have a long road to go at the Gabba as it seems.
