Pakistan opener Saim Ayub on Sunday, December 22 joined Virat Kohli in an elite list of batters after scoring a match-winning hundred against South Africa in Johannesburg. Defending a target of 309 runs, the visitors bowled the hosts out for 271 in 42 overs, in what was a 47-over game because of rain at the Wanderers Stadium.
Ayub smacked 101 runs in 94 balls as Pakistan scored a whopping 308/9 at the Wanderers. It was his second century of the series and it saw him enter an elite list of overseas batters with multiple hundreds in bilateral ODI series in the Rainbow Nation.
The list has some big names, including former Australia cricketer David Warner, Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman and Joe Root, who also have two ODI centuries in South Africa. Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen and Kohli have three hundreds each.
The result saw Pakistan become the first side to whitewash South Africa at their home in an ODI series. Pakistan batted first after losing the toss and was 1/1 when they lost Abdullah Shafique in the first over.
The innings took off with Ayub involved in two key partnerships, 114 runs for the second wicket with Babar Azam (52 in 71) and 93 runs for the third with skipper Mohammad Rizwan (53 in 52).
The 22-year-old Ayub, who scored 109 in the first ODI, was caught behind against debutant Corbin Bosch. Ayub smacked two sixes and a whopping 13 boundaries. Middle-order batter Salman Agha padded the total with a 33-ball 48.
In reply, Heinrich Klaasen top scored for the hosts with 81 runs in 43 deliveries and Bosch finished unbeaten on 40. Pakistan spinner Sufiyan Muqeem took 4/52 in eight overs.
Pakistan won the first ODI by three wickets, and followed it up with a massive 81-run win in the second ODI to bag an unassailable lead in the three-match series.
