Pakistan did not enjoy a great time with Babar Azam as their white-ball captain. The only highlight of his captaincy career was beating India and reaching the final of the 2021 T20 World Cup. Since then, under his leadership, Pakistan have been knocked out of the group stage in the T20 World Cups in 2022 and 2024, and also the ODI World Cup 2023. For a brief period, he stepped down as captain, with Shaheen Afridi taking up the mantle, but Babar was again reinstated just months after this decision. Now, Mohammad Rizwan has replaced Babar as the white-ball skipper.
Did Mohammad Rizwan Take Dig At Babar Azam?
After Mohammad Rizwan was announced as the new captain of the Pakistan white-ball side, he faced the media, where he said that he is here to serve the team. He would not consider himself a'king' as a captain, otherwise everything would fall apart. This might have been a dig at former captain Babar Azam, who is often referred to as 'king' by teammates and fans.
“If I start considering myself a king as captain, then everything will fall apart. Rather, as a leader, I am here to serve the 15 men of the team. This is how it should be. Regarding achievements, Inshallah, we have the messages and support from everyone in our box, who are asking us only one thing: fight, fight, and fight. They keep sending us this message again and again, and we will try our best, Inshallah, to show the whole nation that there is no lack of fight in us,” Rizwan said.
What Will Be Mohammad Rizwan's First Assignment As Captain?
Pakistan are all set to travel to Australia as they face them for three ODIs and three T20Is. This will be the first assignment for Mohammad Rizwan as the new captain of the side. His major target as captain would be to do well in the 2025 Champions Trophy at home.
