The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL ) is set for a blockbuster mega auction with several top names likely to be released by their franchises with many hoping for a big pay day. However, the confirmation of the same will come on Thursday (October 31) when every team is supposed to release the list of retained players.
For those unversed, each team is allowed to retain six players with a maximum of five capped players. Every team has to retain a minimum of one uncapped player while they can retain two players, who have not played for India too.
Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced the return of an old rule which means a franchise can retain any player, who has not played for India for more than five years as an 'uncapped player,'for a sum of Rs. 4 crore.
All eyes are on MS Dhoni on retention deadline day as the world awaits confirmation on whether the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend will play another. The 43-year-old qualifies as an 'uncapped player' as his last appearance for Team India was on 10th July, 2019.
As far as capped players are concerned, a team has to spend Rs. 18 crore (slot 1 and 4), Rs. 14 crore (2 and 5), and Rs. 11 crore (slot 5). A team will have a purse of Rs. 120 crore in the auction and they will lost the amount they spend on retaining players.
While the centre of attention is MS Dhoni, there is doubt over whether Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shubman Gill will decide to stay with their teams.
