After Rohit Sharma retired post leading India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title, the question on everyone's mind was who would become the next captain in the shortest format of the game. After Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of the Indian team, one of the first decisions he took was making Suryakumar Yadav the captain of the India T20I team. Since then he has had a tremendous record for the team, winning 13 of the 20 games he has been in charge. However, former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has revealed that he was shocked at the right-handed batter's appointment as captain.
In an interaction with Star Sports, Sanjay Bangar revealed that he was shocked that Suryakumar Yadav was elevated as the captain, as he expected Hardik Pandya to take over from Rohit Sharma.
“Honestly, I was shocked that he was elevated to captain because, until that point, Hardik Pandya was the captain-designate," Bangar said.
Sanjay Bangar All Praise For Suryakumar Yadav
Sanjay Bangar, however, was all praise for Suryakumar Yadav, because of his man-management skills. He also called him the best fit for this young squad after the retirements of Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli.
“The way he handled that transition shows his great man-management skills. It’s still early days, but he’s the best fit for this young squad after the retirements of Jadeja, Kohli, and Rohit. That’s a big plus—he can be the leader of this new generation, someone who is one among them,” he added.
Suryakumar Yadav Aims To Lead India To Series Win Vs England
Suryakumar Yadav is currently captaining the India side in the five-match ODI series against England. India started the series off to a bang with wins in the first two matches in Kolkata and Chennai. However, they lost the third T20I in Rajkot. They will now head to Pune when they take on England in the 4th T20I. A win in this match will help India seal the series with a match to go.
