Washington Sundar forged an excellent partnership with Nitish Reddy to save India from further blushes on the 3rd day of the fourth Test in Melbourne. Riding on Sundar and Nitish's knock India ended the 3rd day on a high.
Australia looked to be on course to take the command after successive dismissals of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. But the duo had other plans. They successfully navigated the difficulties posed by the Australian bowlers and frustrated the host with a much-needed partnership.
Sundar brought up his 3rd Test half century but soon had to depart as he failed to judge a rising delivery from Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith had an easy catch. India will have a mountain to climb on the 4th day as Mohammed Siraj and Nitish will look to add some more runs to their total in a bid to pile some pressure on the hosts.
Runs have galore on this MCG pitch but Sundar reckoned that there is still something for the bowlers which could be capitalised on by the visitors led by the majestic Jasprit Bumrah. As quoted by ICC he said, “I still feel there's something for the bowlers in this wicket.
“It has been overcast for most of the game until now. If we can bowl in the right areas, if we can take our chances, I'm sure we should be able to get them for 150 and Day 5 will be about (that) exactly.”
Sundar replaced Shubman Gill in the lineup for this Test and the decision now has turned out to be a brilliant gamble which has paid off. India are still in contention for a place in the World Test Championship final and a win in Melbourne will certainly be a massive boost for Rohit Sharma's side.
