Setback To Shakib Al Hasan As Veteran Banned From Bowling In All International And Domestic Tournaments (Source: ICC/X)
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan won't be allowed to bowl in all ICC-backed domestic and international tournaments. The development comes after the ECB deemed Shakib's action illegal and banned the all-rounder from bowling in their domestic competitions.
Shakib was investigated for his action after his club Surrey’s loss to Somerset in September. It was assumed that ECB's ban was applicable to England's domestic tournaments, but the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed that Shakib won't be allowed to bowl in any top-level cricket tournament. Shakib, however, is eligible to play as a pure batter. Shakib will now have to undergo further analysis at the ICC- accredited testing center and if his action is deemed clear, he will be allowed to bowl again.
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been informed that National Team all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). As a result, Shakib is also suspended from bowling in domestic cricket competitions outside Bangladesh and in international cricket. This suspension follows the outcome of an independent assessment conducted at an International Cricket Council (ICC) accredited testing center in the United Kingdom.
“The BCB also understands that, as per clause 11.4 of the ICC regulations, Shakib may undergo further analysis at an ICC-accredited testing centre. Should the results of this analysis clear his action, Shakib will be permitted to bowl in international cricket,” the BCB shared in a media release.
This is the first instance of Shakib being banned from bowling due to illegal action since his debut in 2006. The ace all-rounder is one of the best cricketers to have ever played the game. He holds the record of being the only cricketer to record over 14000 runs and bag 700-plus wickets.
Shakib announced his retirement from Test and T20Is during the India tour, but wished to play the final Test in Dhaka against South Africa. However, the request was not completed due to the political tensions in the country following the exit of Sheikh Hasina. Shakib though is still an active cricketer and wants to play the Champions Trophy for Bangladesh.
