The iconic Gabba has witnessed some of the most iconic cricket matches over the years. It will also conduct the third Test between India and Australia which is scheduled to start on December 14.
Cricket Australia is reportedly planning to submit a proposal which could see the iconic Gabba being replaced by a new stadium. The development came in the midst of the Australian government’s 100-day review of the Olympic venues.
Brisbane is all set to host the 2032 Olympics and the need for a new stadium has been felt. Gabba has been the home of cricket since 1931 but the stadium has grown old with every passing year and perhaps this is the right time to renovate the iconic cricket venue to bring it at par with other cricket stadiums around Australia.
Next season’s Ashes could be the last Test series at this venue as calls have already been made to renovate the Gabba. Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley reiterated that both Queensland Cricket and Brisbane Light might shift into a new stadium after the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
He told the Daily Telegraph, “The Gabba has played a pivotal role in Queensland cricket history and we're delighted by the strong ticket sales for this Test.
“That said, it's clear the Gabba is coming to the end of its useful life and the Brisbane 2032 Games presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to develop a world-class stadium that delivers strong legacy benefits for Queensland, by providing cricket and football fans with the facilities that they deserve.”
Rishabh Pant scored that sensational winner at the Gabba which ensured a brilliant Border Gavaskar Trophy victory back in 2021 and India will be hoping for a similar outcome when they take the field on Saturday.
