Rohit Sharma's form as the Test captain went from bad to worse as India lost their fourth match on the trot under his leadership. Team India suffered a 10-wicket defeat at the hands of Australia in the Adelaide Test match, which finished in just over 2 days. India had landed in Australia after shockingly getting whitewashed by New Zealand under Rohit's leadership.
India pulled off a heist in Perth by winning the series opener under Jasprit Bumrah's captaincy but the visitors lost the second Test by a 10-wicket margin. The defeat saw Rohit overtaking Kapil Dev in an unwanted list.
The present Test captain now has 8 defeats from just 22 matches. Rohit, who took over the Test captaincy in 2022, has led India to 12 wins. Only 2 Tests under Rohit have ended in a draw. Rohit started his captaincy career on a positive note and India were enjoying a purple patch until the home series against NZ.
Kapil Dev, who is now behind Rohit in the unwanted list, captained India to 4 wins and 7 defeats from 34 matches. Under him, India won their first-ever Test series in England.
With 17 defeats, Virat Kohli is ahead of Rohit in the list of Indian captains with most defeats but he is the country's most successful captain. He finished his captaincy career with 40 wins from 68 matches.
Will Rohit Sharma continue to lead India?
There is no word on Rohit's future and he looks set to lead India in the complete series. There could be a change on the cards if India fail to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit could continue as the captain if India win the BGT and make it to the final of the 2025 World Test Championship. Jasprit Bumrah is India's vice-captain and will replace Rohit whenever there is a change in captaincy.
