The Indian cricket team was accused of not showing humility towards Travis Head following his match-winning century in the pink-ball Test following the heated spat with Mohammad Siraj. Head played a knock of 140 in 141 balls as the Pat Cummins-led team levelled the series 1-1.
However, it was an altercation between Siraj and Head that stole the headlines. Siraj ended Head's marathon knock with a stunning yorker that castled the left-handed batter's stumps. Following the dismissal, the two players had a war of words while the Indian pacer gave him a send-off.
The issue did not end on the field, as Head was critical of Siraj's action in the post-match press conference and claimed he told him, 'Well bowled.' The 30-year-old was not pleased with Head's remarks and claimed he was lying about what he said.
Talking about the incident, Australian great Hayden claimed there was no need for further action against both players but backed Head's version of events.
“There is no need to take further action on that. It was an incident that neither party really enjoyed. I don't think the cricket public enjoys that sort of reaction. He has bowled a wonderful ball, let's not forget that. An innings that was absolutely superb, it was a really significant moment. The removal of Travis Head.
"He said 'well bowled'. I could lip-read. But I suppose, in the heat of the battle there is going always going to be misinterpretation. But the point is my opinion, all is fair in love and war when it comes to the actual removal of the batter," said Hayden on commentary on Star Sports.
However, the former Australia opener was not happy with Indian players not congratulating the 30-year-old on his century.
“For someone who has played as magnificently as Travis Head did, there should be a moment of humility from the opposition side to say well played rather than the send-off. I don't expect that from the fast bowler, because he is pumped up full of gas and energy. But from the rest of the field, there should be a movement towards the batter, a decent clap, and a ‘well played’, Hayden added.
Austalia won the match by 10 wickets. The third Test will start on Saturday (December 14) at the Gabba in Brisbane.
