KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Pakistan PM met the PCB chief
- The Champions Trophy 2025 status remains uncertain
- The tournament is likely to be played in a hybrid model
With only 74 days left for the 2025 Champions Trophy (CT) to begin, the tournament remains in deadlock as neither the dates nor the venue of the tournament have been confirmed. With the clock ticking fast, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi met Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to brief him on the developments on the issue.
While Pakistan are set to host an International Cricket Council (ICC) event after 29 years, India have confirmed they will not travel to the country with the expectation that the tournament will be played in a hybrid model. While the PCB maintained that it will not accept a hybrid model, it has emerged in recent days that they have agreed to the modelwhich will see India play their matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
However, they have kept few key conditions including a fusion formula which will mean that a similar arrangement is made for ICC events to be hosted in India.
Pakistan PM's Message to Mohsin Naqvi On Champions Trophy 2025
According to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI), Sharif assured Naqvi of complete support to the PCB on the issue and called for Pakistan to keep their self-respect. The Pakistan PM also told the PCB chief that the issue is not just about money but also public sentiment.
"The stance adopted by the PCB reflects the feelings of all Pakistanis when it comes to the Champions Trophy after the refusal of India to play in Pakistan," Sharif told Naqvi during the meeting as per GEO TV.
The PTI report stated that the meeting was called for Naqvi to brief Sharif on the latest developments as the BCCI was not ready to accept the 'fusion formula.' The PCB chief wanted the PM's approval to take a tough decision to break the deadlock.
