Pickleball has emerged as the fastest-growing sport in the US. Its popularity is likely to reach it peak in the next few years and pickleball can compete with tennis soon. Amid pickleball's soaring popularity, the YMCA has decided to dedicate a pickleball facility to the people of Oklahoma.
The YMCA will build 8 pickleball courts in the 15,600 square foot area outdoor complex. The facility will be open in April 2025. "For years, pickleball matches have taken place in basketball gyms, parking lots, multipurpose rooms and even outdoor courtyards at some of our Ys," Kelly Kay, president & CEO of the YMCA of Greater Oklahoma City, said.
"While these spaces worked, they were never designed with the sport in mind. The Thurman Family Pickleball Center will serve as a home for pickleball — a place where players of all skill levels can come together to learn, compete, build friendships and grow."
Recently, 4 new pickleball courts opened at Portage Park in Chicago and the authorities are planning to add 200 more courts there to keep up with its rising popularity in the country. Pickleball's popularity is also on the rise in India and the fans are getting attracted to the sport.
