The eyes of the cricketing world were on the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead the retention deadline, with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav's future at stake. Despite the chaotic events of last seasons, all four players will stay with the franchise alongside young star Tilak Verma
It is more than likely that the five-time champions will have to burn more than half their purse in order to retain the big guns. For those unversed, each team is allowed to retain a maximum of six players (five capped). They can retain a minimum of one or a maximum of two uncapped players.
The five-time champions have the joint-lowest purse at the auction having spent Rs. 75 crore. Jasprit Bumrah will be their top paid player and earn Rs. 18 crore. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya will earn Rs. 16.35 crore each. Former skipper Rohit Sharma will earn Rs. 16.3 crore. Meanwhile, Hardik will continue to lead the side, the franchise have confirmed.
"We have always believed that the strength of a family lies in its core and this belief has been reinforced during the course of recent events. We are thrilled that the strong legacy of MI will be carried forward by Jasprit, Surya, Hardik, Rohit and Tilak - players who have become synonymous with our team and the brand of cricket we stand for.
"In the past month, the MI core group, along with our coaching staff, have come together and worked closely to establish a shared vision for MI. This unified effort reinstates MI’s commitment to building strong trust and ownership amongst our core group, our fans & other stakeholders.
