Nitish Reddy achieved his first fifty for India during the second T20I against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, October 9. The all-rounder displayed an explosive performance in the second T20I, despite the Delhi pitch appearing favorable for bowlers at the start. Reddy and Rinku Singh stepped in to stabilize India after the home side lost three wickets in quick succession. Reddy, in only his second T20I match, made an impressive contribution of 74 runs.
India's batting order faced early setbacks with the dismissals of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav. At this crucial moment, Reddy came to the crease for India. Despite the weight of the three lost wickets, he played with confidence and began launching sixes. His bold style of play rapidly brought him to a half-century in just 27 deliveries. After the fifty, he received a standing ovation from the Indian dugout, which also included coach Gautam Gambhir.
Reddy was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman later on. Although he did not reach the hundred, his impressive performance under pressure has positioned him as a strong contender for a spot in the Indian team for the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup.
Reddy caught everyone's attention in age-group cricket by amassing 1,237 runs at an impressive average of 176.41 during the 2017-18 Vijay Merchant Trophy, setting a tournament record that earned him the Best Cricketer in the Under-16 Jagmohan Dalmiya award at the BCCI annual awards for the 2017-2018 season. He also represented India B in the U19 category.
Following a remarkable IPL 2024 season, where the young talent showcased his exceptional hard-hitting abilities, Nitish was called up to the Indian team for the shorter format, only to be struck down by unfortunate circumstances. Just days after being included in India’s squad for the tour of Zimbabwe, a hernia issue prevented him from playing for his country, ruling him out once more.
