Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the USA and slowly and steadily it is asserting dominance in rest of the world. Apart from USA, Australia garners a huge attraction for the sport. There is also Canada, United Kingdom among the top pickleball countries in the world. As per a study from 2019 to 2022, the sport has grown by leaps and bounds by a whopping 150%. Even India is in pole position as a growing pickleball country as per DUPR growth.
Just like any other racquet sport, pickleball is full of thrills and spills but the referees make sure that everything is in the spirit of the game and no one gains an undue advantage over anyone.
In every sport, there are certain equipment rules that needs to be followed and the job of the refs is to make sure that are properly adhered to. So in pickleball, referees have this habit of checking the paddles/bats, even players also check themselves, so everything is in order.

Why Referees Check Paddles Of Each Player In Pickleball?

The reason is very simple and everyone should adhere to it no matter what. Refs always check it before the players can use it in a full-fledged manner. They check whether the paddles are approved under USAPA or USA Pickleball or not. There has to be a USPA sticker to be legal for tournaments. Once a player has the paddle in their hands it is beyond the manufacturer's control. Field checks ensure that the approved ones are brought in by the players for play.
Why It Is Important To Have Approved Paddles Only?
The only reason to have approved paddles on board so that there is no extra or illegal amount of grit that can influence the maximum amount of spin in a paddle. Especially new paddles have an insane amount of grit but after using it for a few months, the grit power comes down. With the grit intact, it is easier to generate a high amount of spin on the paddle face.

What Is A Grit?

Grit is the spin, which comes from the grit of the paddle's face. The more grit, the greater the amount of spin one will achieve. But like we said, the USPA has certain eligibilities and that is why paddles can't possess any sort of rough texturing, indentations or holes that will allow spin more than the permissible limit.
