A magnificent DRS call from Rohit Sharma helped India get a crucial breakthrough in the second Test against New Zealand. After losing Tom Latham early, New Zealand bounced back, courtesy of a 46-run partnership between Will Young and Devon Conway. At 76-1, New Zealand were in a comfortable position and India looked in desperate need of a wicket.
Ashwin bowled a leg-side delivery to Will Young and it kissed the gloves before lobbing in the air for Sarfaraz to take the catch. The on-field decision was not out, but Sarfaraz was absolutely sure that it hit the glove. He convinced Rohit Sharma to go for a review and it turned out to be a masterstroke as there was a spike as the ball went past the gloves of Will Young.
R Ashwin Creates History
The wicket helped R Ashwin become the leading wicket-taker in the World Test Championship (WTC). Ashwin needed two wickets to leapfrog Nathan Lyon's tally of 187 wickets. The ace spinner first removed Tom Latham LBW and the wicket of Will Young helped him create history and top the charts of most WTC wickets.
Meanwhile, Sarfaraz was retained in the Indian playing XI ahead of KL Rahul. It was a toss-up between him and Rahul as Shubman Gill made a return to the playing XI. India persisted with Sarfaraz given that he scored a magnificent 150 in the first Test.
India also made a couple more changes to the playing XI for the second test. Apart from Gill replacing Rahul, India dropped Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav, with Akash Deep and Washington Sundar taking their spots.
New Zealand managed to avoid any more setbacks as they reached 92/2 at Lunch on Day 1, with Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway at the crease. Conway looked solid in the first session and raced to 47.
