With less than a month to go for the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series between India and Australia, BCCI are keen to travel with a large squad, including net bowlers and two potential India stars has been recognised for the role of the fast-bowling all-rounder for the series down under in Australia.
As per a report by The Indian Express, the selectors have shortlisted former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star, Shardul Thakur and Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) Nitish Reddy for the tour.
Even though Nitish Reddy has been selected for India A squad for the Australia tour, his performance will be evaluated from close quarters. The 21-year old made a huge mark in the 2024 IPL and which also led him to play in the Duleep Trophy and even got his T20I debut during the Bangladesh series, where he made a top-score of 74 and and scalped 3 wickets. The selectors are eager to see, whether the youngster can bowl 10-15 overs a day or not, which gives him a good opportunity to make it count and earn his place in the senior side.
But if we look at Shardul Thakur, the 33-year old has the experience but is out of the Test scene since featuring in the South Africa tour in December, 2023. He was part of that team during the 2019-2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, when the Indian side defied all odds to conquer the Aussies in their fortress Gabba.
The report adds that both the cricketers will be fighting for the lone spot and the squad is most likely to be announced on 28th October. The side is also expected to have an old face back in the team in Cheteshwar Pujara as his record against the Aussies in Australia cannot be ignored by any means. Star pacer, Mohammed Shami is doubtful as he races against time to get fit as the series starts from November 22.
