Jammu and Kashmir batter Abdul Samad on Monday created history by becoming the first from the state to hit two centuries in two innings of a Ranji Trophy game. He is single-handedly driving his state's charge against Odisha in this Group A encounter of the domestic first-class competition, with just a month left for the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Samad batted with purpose and pace as he smacked 108 in as many deliveries, smashing six sixes and five fours in the second innings. Jammu and Kashmir declared on 270/7 and Odisha will have to chase down 269 with just two sessions left in the match.
At the time of writing, Odisha were 19/3 after 15.1 overs. None of the other Jammu and Kashmir batters could score even a half-century in their second innings as Samad stood out with his brilliant innings.
In the first innings, the 22-year-old had scored 127 off 117 balls, hitting six fours and nine sixes. None of the other batters in Samad's team even managed to go past 40 in the first innings at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, which looks to have assisted spinners.
In Jammu and Kashmir's first match against Maharashtra, Samad scored 23 in the only innings that he got to bat in. They declared on a whopping 519/7, with opener Shubham Khajuria scoring 255 and wicketkeeper Shivansh Sharma 106.

Can Samad be retained by the Sunrisers Hyderabad?

It is highly unlikely that the batter from Jammu and Kashmir will be retained by the IPL 2024 runners-up. Samad scored 182 runs from 12 matches at an average of 23.88. He can still be retained as an uncapped player or through RTM, but in that case, Hyderabad might take a look at Mayank Markande as well, who picked eight wickets in seven matches but was pretty expensive.
