Mumbai have made a huge call before the third round of the Ranji Trophy and dropped Prithvi Shaw following his below-par performance. The right-handed batsman managed scores of 7 and 12 in the opening game of the tournament against Baroda. Shaw departed for 1 in the first innings against Maharashtra.
Shaw remained unbeaten on 39 off 36 balls in the chase to the target of 74. But he has been omitted for the next game against Tripura, scheduled to kick off on October 26.
"He has been given a break. The selectors and the coach have had a discussion with him and have briefed him about areas to work on, including fitness," MCA secretary Abhay Hadap was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
Shaw kicked off the 2024/25 season with scores of 4 and 76 in the Irani Cup game against the Rest of India. Mumbai won the tournament under Ajinkya Rahane's leadership. Before the Irani Cup, Shaw travelled to England to play county cricket and List A matches for Northants.
Shaw last played a Test match for India in the infamous 2020 Adelaide Test. He made his Test return during the England tour in 2021 but was dropped without feating in the playing XI. He made his T20I comeback early in 2023 but didn't get a game. He has played 5 Tests, 6 ODIs and one T20I.
Suryakumar Yadav released
Mumbai will be without the services of Suryakumar Yadav for their next game. The India T20I captain has pulled out of the game due to personal commitments. He played the second game of the season against Maharashtra.
Suryakumar isn't in the scheme of things in Test cricket. His only Test appearance has come against Australia in 2023. He hasn't even played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup final. He will lead India in the four-match T20I series against South Africa in November.
