Will Shreyas Iyer leave KKR? Photo: BCCI
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ended their decade-long wait by winning the IPL 2024 trophy. The Shreyas Iyer-led side dominated in the league stage and topped the points table with 9 wins from 14 matches. KKR became the first team to make it to the final with a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the first qualifier.
KKR registered a one-sided win in the final to clinch the trophy. The Kolkata-based franchise suffered few blows after the season as head coach Gautam Gambhir, assistant coach, Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach, Ryan ten Doeschate left the camp to join team India's coaching staff.
Dwayne Bravo has joined KKR as their mentor while the rest of the appointments are likely to be made soon. Will a change in the team management also see a change in captaincy?
The Times of India has reported that KKR want to retain Iyer but not as their top retention. Andre Russell is reportedly the frontrunner to be KKR's first-choice retention.
The report adds that a section in KKR's camp wanted Nitish Rana to continue as the captain in IPL 2024. He led the team in IPL 2023. Iyer missed the season due to an injury. Iyer returned to take over the charge while Nitish was appointed the vice-captain.
Iyer will be in huge demand if he decides to enter the auction as few franchises are expected to change their captain. Iyer started his captaincy career with Delhi Capitals and led them to the final of IPL 2020. He played under Rishabh Pant in IPL 2021.
KKR's other retentions
There is no doubt that KKR will retain Sunil Narine, who put on an all-round show in IPL 2024. Harshit Rana is still an uncapped player and he looks set to stay with the franchise. KKR could also retain Ramandeep Singh or Suyash Sharma for Rs 4 crore.
