The preparations for the IPL 2025 auction are in full swing and the franchises are busy inking on their retentions for the season. Delhi Capitals (DC) is one of the franchises which has underperformed in the past few seasons but the team could have some automatic picks. Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel seem to be DC's obvious retentions before the auction.
All eyes are on Rishabh as recently a report suggested that he might not remain DC's captain. The Times of India reported that DC could be looking for a new captain and Axar may take over the role.
Amid the reports of DC looking for a new captain, Rishabh has shared a cryptic Instagram story. The DC captain took to social media and wrote: "Sometimes it's best to just be quiet and let God show people."
Rishabh took over as DC's captain before IPL 2021. He replaced Shreyas Iyer, who was ruled out of the season due to an injury. DC retained Rishabh as the captain even when Iyer returned for the second half of IPL 2021. The franchise made it to the second round.
DC retained Rishabh before the IPL 2022 mega-auction while Iyer entered the auction. DC tried to re-sign Iyer but couldn't make the winning bid for him. Rishabh continued as DC's captain. DC haven't made it to the playoffs since IPL 2021.
The team's below-par performance could be one of the reasons why the owners could look for a new captain. DC recently appointed Hemnag Badani as their head coach while Venugopal Rao was appointed the director of cricket. The former Indian batsmen will have a key role in deciding the new captain.
The IPL franchises have until October 31 to submit the list of retained and released players to the BCCI. The IPL 2025 mega-auction is likely to take place in the last week of November outside of India.
