Virat Kohli etched his name into the history books by eclipsing MS Dhoni's record as India's second-most capped international cricketer. Kohli went past the former India World Cup-winning captain on Day 2 of the India vs New Zealand first Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Kohli registered his 536th international appearance, overtaking Dhoni's tally of 535 caps. Only Sachin Tendulkar remains at the top of the mountain with 664 caps. As far as active Indian cricketers, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja follow Kohli with 486 and 346 caps, respectively.
Kohli has enjoyed a brilliant cricketing career, scoring 27,041 runs and notching up 80 centuries in his international career. Once again, only Sachin Tendulkar remains ahead of him.
However, Kohli did not have a memorable outing in the Bengaluru Test scoring a duck. Kohli continued his poor run at the No.3 position in Test - averaging 16.16 from seven innings including today, with a highest score of 41.
Meanwhile, India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and was elected to bat against New Zealand in the rain-truncated opening Test on Thursday.
India made two changes: Sarfaraz Khan replaced an injured Shubman Gill, who was not "100 per cent" according to the skipper, and Kuldeep Yadav replaced seamer Akash Deep as a third spinner.
"Shubman Gill was unavailable for selection of the first Test due to a neck stiffness," the Indian team management informed after the toss.
The first day’s play was washed out due to persistent rain.
India and New Zealand will play two more Tests, at Pune from October 24-28 and at Mumbai from November 1-5.
