Shreyas Iyer created history at the IPL 2025 mega-auction when he joined Punjab Kings (PBKS) for a record sum of Rs 26.75 crore. Iyer became the costliest-ever pick in the history of IPL. His record was broken by Rishabh Pant, who joined Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 27 crore few minutes later. Iyer was with the Mumbai cricket team during the time of the mega-auction.
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Iyer has revealed that he was dumbstruck during the auction. The right-handed batsman said that he covered his ears and went to the washroom.
"I was absolutely gobsmacked. I wasn't expecting that amount, but I was expecting somewhere around that amount. So once (the bidding) crossed a certain point, I was covering my ears with cotton and I just didn't want to stay in front of the TV. I went to the washroom. I was in Hyderabad at that point of time, playing Syed Mushtaq Ali (Iyer was Mumbai captain). Yeah, I was dumbstruck," he said.
PBKS have confirmed that Iyer will lead the team in IPL 2025. Iyer will once again work with Ricky Ponting, the head coach of PBKS. The duo worked together at Delhi Capitals (DC). Iyer captained DC from 2018 to 2020 while Ponting coached them from 2018 to 2024.
DC ended their seven-year drought and made it to the playoffs of IPL 2019. They played their first-ever final in 2020. Rishabh Pant captained DC in 2021. Iyer moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022 and captained them to their third IPL title win in 2024.
Iyer has enjoyed success as captain in IPL and has 38 wins from 70 matches. He will create history in IPL 2025 and become the first Indian player to lead three IPL teams.
Should PBKS win IPL 2025, Iyer will become the first captain to win IPL titles with two different teams. Hardik Pandya can also become the first captain to do so if Mumbai Indians win IPL 2025.
