Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has said that Gautam Gambhir should ensure that only the players who respect the sport should be in the team and the ones who don't should be shown the door. Under Gambhir's guidance, India were whitewashed by New Zealand at home and then Australia defeated them 3-1 to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in the last decade.
Basit Ali has advised Gambhir to take a lead out of Aaqib Javed's book to shut the star culture in the Indian team. Many cricketers have claimed that the star culture in the Indian team is pulling it down.
Gambhir has now been put in a tough situation, having lost two big series in a row and will need to make some big decisions before June, when India play England in a five-match away Test series.
"It's the best time for Gautam Gambhir to adopt Aaqib Javed's philosophy: 'cricket ko izzat do; jo cricket ko izzat nahi dega, ta-ta bye bye (give respect to cricket; the ones who don't, they will be out of the team). That should be the message," Basit Ali said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
Javed replaced South Africa's Gary Kirsten and Australia's Jason Gillespie as interim head coach for the white and red-ball sides. He serves on the selection committee as well, which dropped ace Pakistan batter Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi after they lost the first Test to England at home.
"Aaqib ended the superstar culture in the Pakistan team. Those who thought 'I am important', he told them 'it's your false notion'. He said every player is equal," Basit Ali said.
Skipper Rohit Sharma and star batter Virat Kohli were out of form during the just-concluded Test series against Australia. The series loss resulted in the side losing out on qualifying for the World Test Championship final and the entire superstar culture discussion is surrounded around the duo.
