Very few Australian batters managed to get the better of Jasprit Bumrah in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy. Despite India’s failure to retain the BGT, the Indian vice-captain ended up with 32 wickets, the most in the five-match series.
Australia defeated India by six wickets in the final Test to wrap up the BGT 3-1 and secure a place in the World Test Championship final. Bumrah was a lone warrior in the series as the Indian batting order faltered once again.
None of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could be able to score runs consistently as the likes of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Yashasvi Jaiswal utilised their chances to get some valuable runs for their country.
Usman Khawaja’s duel with Bumrah was one of the focal points of the series. The Australian opener had enjoyed a brilliant run against the 31-year-old before the start of the series. But he went on to be a regular casualty to Bumrah’s trap as he was dismissed six times by the fast bowler in the series.
Reflecting on his battle with Bumrah the Aussie told ABC Sport, "To be honest, I was just getting Bumrah-ed.
"It was friggin' tough work. It was tough work. People were asking me 'what's going on?' I'm being honest, I'm just getting Bumrah-ed."
"You never want to see anyone injured and it's a shame he was, but thank God for us. Because today would have been an absolute nightmare facing him on that wicket.
"And you can see what a big part of their team he was. And everyone felt it. As soon as we didn't see Bumrah out there, we had this sense of feeling that we've actually got a chance here."
Australia will now fly down to face Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series.
