Sanju Samson is riding high on confidence after hitting his maiden T20I ton for Team India during the third T20I against Bangladesh on Saturday (October 11). The 29-year-old reached the milestone for the first time in his career nine years after making his debut in the shortest format.
Samson's place in the team was under scrutiny after making just 39 runs in the first games. Earlier, he failed on the tour of Sri Lanka as he made two ducks in two outings in the T20I series. However, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper seems to have confirmed his spot as the Men in Blue's first-choice wicket-keeper batter in the shortest format.
Sanju Samson Set For Test Debut?
With his stocks at an all-time high, Samson has indicated his desire to play Test cricket for India. The star wicket-keeper has revealed that the team management have told him that he is their plans for red-ball cricket. Samson is set to play Kerala's second match of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy campaign against Karnataka from October 18.
"I believe I have the skill-set to succeed in red-ball cricket and I just don't want to be restricted to just white-ball cricket. I desire to play Tests for India. Before the Duleep Trophy, the leadership group told me that they were considering me for red-ball cricket and asked me to take it seriously and play more Ranji Trophy matches," said Samson to the Kerala media in an interaction on Tuesday (October 15).
"My preparation was good this time around. After the series against Sri Lanka, I trained at the RR Academy with Rahul Dravid sir and Zubin Bharucha worked on my game. The century in the Duleep Trophy has given me a lot of confidence as it came against some of the best bowlers in the country,'' Samson added.
Samson has a modest record in first-class cricket with just 3819 runs in 64 matches at an average of 38.96. Recently, he was not picked in any of the four original squads in the Duleep Trophy but was later drafted in after an injury to Ishan Kishan.
Samson impressed in the tournament with 196 runs in four innings at an average of 49.00, which included one century.
