India pacer Akash Deep has promised that he and his fellow bowlers won't let tormentor-in-chief Travis Head settle down in the Melbourne Test and will look to dismiss him as soon as possible. The series is tied at 1-1 and the Indian team will look to go all guns blazing as they aim to take a crucial lead in the five-match Test series.
Head has been a thorn in the flesh for Indian bowlers and on most occasions, nothing has worked against him as he has gone on to score two hundreds in the last two matches.
India bagged consecutive series victories in Australia, first under ace batter Virat Kohli's captaincy in 2018-19 and then under Ajinkya Rahane in 2020-21. Skipper Rohit Sharma has a golden opportunity to repeat the feat.
"As pacers, we will stick to the same deliveries and maintain discipline in our bowling. We will bowl from both over and around the wicket, assess the pitch and conditions and plan accordingly," Akash said while speaking to the media after the practice session on Sunday, December 22.
"I think Travis Head, in particular, struggles against short balls. We won’t let him settle at the crease. We’ll target specific areas and hope to force him into mistakes, which will create chances for us," Akash added.
India started the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in style with a commanding 295-run victory over Australia in Perth but suffered a 10-wicket loss in the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.
Akash and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah's rear-guard action in the final session on Day 4 of the Gabba Test proved to be the turning point. The pair added 47 crucial runs for the 10th wicket, helping India avoid the follow-on and, as a result, walking away with a draw to maintain the five-match series scoreline at 1-1.
