Wellington Phoenix have continued their Women's A-League revival — stretching their unbeaten run to four straight games with a 2-0 win over defending champions Sydney FC at Porirua.
In a fixture stalled for an hour at halftime by thunderstorms, the home side dominated after the eventual restart, heaping more grief on their bottom-of-the-table rivals.
Goals to Grace Jale and Zoe McMeeken gave the Phoenix their most convincing of their three victories so far this season, as they climbed six spots to fourth on the competition table and broke even in goal difference, after beginning their campaign with three consecutive losses.
Through the opening 45 minutes, the teams battled out a stalemate — with the best chances falling to the visitors.

English forward Millie Farrow somewhat botched two quick opportunities in succession for Sydney, lobbing towards goal but keeper Carolia Vilao was able to scurry back to prevent the ball from crossing the plane.
Indecision during the subsequent clearance led Farrow to again pounce on a wayward pass, only to spray her shot wide right, with just the keeper to beat.
As the weather broke and rain bucketed down, the rivals reached halftime in scoreless deadlock, with the Phoenix barely threatening the Sydney goal.
The second half restart was delayed by the inclement conditions, which included lightning strikes in the area. When the contest resumed, Phoenix went up a gear to impose their superiority.
Breaking from their own half in the 59th minute, they presented Jale with the ball well outside the penalty area and her rightfoot effort seemed speculative, until it skidded under the dive of keeper Tahlia Franco and inside the left post.
With regulation time almost up and the Yellow Fever already shirtless, captain Annalie Longo sent a high corner into the goalmouth and somehow found McMeeken in the crowd. Her header gave Franco no chance.
"We were a little flat in that first 45 [minutes]," reflected Longo. "With the rain and the lightning, we knew it was about restarting, and coming out with more energy and more fight.
"We were losing all the second balls in that first half, so it was coming out with more belief and confidence, and I think you say that in the second half.
"It wasn't pretty, but three points and very proud of the girls."
Their run will face a stern test next Saturday, when the Phoenix visit tabletoppers Melbourne City.
Spurs claimed a 4-3 win in their EFL Cup quarterfinal match against Manchester United.
