White Ferns captain Sophie Devine has won the toss and invited Australia to bat first in their second Rose Bowl one-day at Wellington's Basin Reserve.

The opening encounter of the three-match series — pitting the world T20 champions against the world ODI titleholders — was rained out on Thursday, but weather was kinder to the teams this morning, with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon.

"There's been a bit of rain around and the wicket's been undercover, so there's usually a bit in it early doors," said Devine. "We cant to make the most of it."

The decision would also set the home side up for an abbreviated run chase, if conditions close in later.

"Disappointing not to get on the park the other day, but hopefully plenty of fans will rock up today," said Devine. "It's awesome to have a bit of momentum off the World Cup win, but we know this is a different format against the current world champions, so we know what we're up for.

The NZ women have named Otago batter Bella James for an international debut, partnering with provincial teammate Suzie Bates at the top of the order.

"It's always exciting to be on hand when a new debutant comes along," said Devine. "Shee's been fantastic for the Otago Sparks and thoroughly deserves it.

"I'm sure she would have liked to bat first and get things underway, but really excited for her."
