Ravichandran Ashwin's sudden retirement invited a lot of reactions from all corners of the world. After the Brisbane Test, The 38 year old announced he will bid adieu to international cricket with immediate effect and will not take part in the remaining two Test matches in Melbourne and Sydney.
Ashwin ended his career as the second-highest Indian wicket-taker in Test matches after Anil Kumble with 537 scalps. He only played in the Adelaide pink ball Test in the Border Gavaskar Trophy and Mitchell Marsh happened to be his last victim.
Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Rashid Latif believes Ashwin has all the qualities to be the head of the BCCI and ICC in near future. In an interaction with IANS, he said, “As a cricketer, as a genius of the game […] there are many cricketers in India, but Ashwin is on a different level.
“His qualities are of a different level. I believe that in the future, he could take over BCCI or ICC as he’s that capable. He is very humble, and you wouldn’t even realize that he’s such a big cricketer. Best wishes to him from my side, from Pakistan. He’s had an outstanding career. Look at him; as a batter, Ashwin has six [Test] centuries, which Dhoni probably doesn’t even have."
Latif also added that perhaps the players didn't receive the respect in the dressing room and that could be one of the reasons behind his decision to retire from international cricket imminently.
“Ashwin, as a cricketer, maybe he hasn’t received the respect he deserves in the dressing room; I don’t know about it. He’s wondering if he’ll be in the playing XI or not. He’s the world’s No. 3 bowler, and taking 537 wickets for India is a huge achievement."
