The International Cricket Council (ICC) ended months of debate over th future of the 2025 Champions Trophy by confirming that the tournament will be played in a hybrid model as India will not travel to Pakistan for the mega event and their matches will be played at a neutral venue.
The World Cricket governing body also stated that a similar arrangement will be in place for the 2025 Women's World Cup and 2026 Men's T20 World Cup as Pakistan will not travel to India for both events and their matches will be played in a third country. While Sri Lanka is declared co-host for the 2026 T20 World Cup, next year's Women's World Cup will have more severe repercussions.
Will Pakistan Play the Women's World Cup 2025?
However, there remains a rider to the model, as Pakistan is unlikely to play the event as things stand. The Women in Green are struggling to qualify for the quadrennial event and have missed out on direct qualification.
For those unversed, the qualification for the Women's World Cup 2025 is based on the ICC Women's Championship 2022-2025. The top five teams, alongside hosts India, will qualify for the event. Pakistan is currently eighth in the table, and with no matches left, they have no medium to better their ranking.
ICC Women's Championship Table - As Things Stand
The remaining two spots will be decided by the 2025 Women's World Cup qualifier tournament, which will take place next year. The tournament will be a six-team tournament consisting of the teams finishing 7th-10th in the Women's Championship table. As things stand, Pakistan and Ireland will play in the tournament and will be joined by two of Sri Lanka, West Indies, Bangladesh, and New Zealand. Scotland and Thailand will also play in the tournament as the two next best teams in the ICC rankings.
The Women in Green face an uphill challenge to qualify as they lost their last ODI series to New Zealand, West Indies, and Bangladesh. Although they did win their last series in the 50-over format against Ireland and Sri Lanka.
