Ravichandran Ashwin shocked the cricketing world when he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket after the conclusion of the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba Cricket Ground in Brisbane. Tributes have poured from all over for the legendary spinner who has enjoyed a stellar career for India, where he has finished as the country's second-highest wicket-taker across all formats. However, fans would be wondering why Ravichandran Ashwin .
According to a report by India Today, Ravichandran Ashwin expressed disappointment at the fact that he has consistently been left out of the playing XI despite being in top form, especially in overseas conditions. What happened in Australia regarding his place in the playing XI might have been the last straw that forced him to take this decision. Washington Sundar played ahead of him in the first Test. He returned in the second Test but was dropped for the third Test in favour of Ravindra Jadeja.
According to a report by PTI, Ravichandran Ashwin did not even want to travel to Australia if a place in the playing XI was not enured. This especially happened with Gautam Gambhir's decision to bring Washington Sundar into the mix of things.
How Ravichandran Ashwin Announced His Retirement?
Ravichandran Ashwin announced his surprising retirement from all forms of international cricket in the press conference after Day 5 of the India vs Australia third Test, where he accompanied captain Rohit Sharma.
"This will be my last day as an Indian cricket in all formats of the game at the international level. I do feel there is a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer. I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket. So this will be my last day. I have had a lot of fun. I must say I've created a lot of memories alongside Rohitt and several of my teammates," Ashwin announced.
"Obviously, there are a lot of people to thank. But, I would be failing in my duty if I didn't thank the BCCI and the rest of my teammates. I want to name a few of them and all the coaches -- Rohit, Virat, Ajinkya and Pujara who have taken all those catches in the slips to help me get those wickets," he concluded.
