R Ashwin made a shocking announcement after the third Test against Australia in Gabba and quit international cricket. Ashwin was India's most experienced spinner in Australia but was benched in the first Test match in Perth. He was convinced to play the pink-ball Test match in Adelaide and was once again benched in Gabba.
Ashwin's decision to retire after the Gabba Test drew parallels with Anil Kumble's retirement from international cricket. The former India captain quit the game after playing his last Test against Australia. Here, we have a look 5 similarities between Ashwin and Kumble's retirements -
Both retired against Australia
Both R Ashwin and Anil Kumble played their last Test match against Australia. Ashwin was included in the final XI for the Adelaide Test match. Captain Rohit Sharma revealed that Ashwin had to be convinced to play that game. Kumble played his last Test in Delhi in 2008.
Both retired after 3rd Test of the series
Both Ashwin and Kumble announced their retirements after the third game of the series. The ongoing series is levelled 1-1. In 2008, India were leading the series 1-0. India won the 2008 BGT 2-0.
No farewell
Both the Indian legends made sudden retirements and did not get a farewell. Ashwin was dropped for the Gabba Test and retired after being benched. Kumble did play the Delhi game but he wanted to play the fourth Test in Nagpur. The former India captain retired as country's highest wicket-taker.
Both scalped more than 500 wickets
Ashwin finished his Test career with 537 wickets in 106 Test matches. Kumble, India's highest wicket-taker, scalped 619 wickets in 132 Tests. Both bowlers took 8 ten-fers each.
The Mitchell connection
Both Ashwin and Kumble dismissed a 'Mitchell' to end their Test career. Ashwin dismissed Mitchell Marsh to end his Test career. Mitchell Johnson was Kumble's last international wicket.
