R Ashwin brought down curtains on his illustrious career and announced a shock retirement from international cricket after the third Test match against Australia. One of the best all-rounders in Test cricket, Ashwin ended his career after donning 106 Test, 116 ODI and 65 T20I caps. He made his India debut in 2010.
Gautam Gambhir, Ashwin's teammate from 2010 to 2016, took to X to share a heartfelt post for the spinner and wrote: "The privilege of seeing you grow from a young bowler to a legend of modern cricket is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world! I know that generations of bowlers to come will say that I became a bowler coz of Ashwin! U will be missed brother!"
Gambhir is the present head coach of Team India and Ashwin would have discussed his decision with him. Speaking to the press, captain Rohit Sharma revealed that he learned about Ashwin's decision in Perth. Rohit missed the Perth Test due to personal reasons. Ashwin had to be convinced to play the Adelaide Test match.
Ashwin was benched for the first Test match in Perth. He played the day-night Test match in Adelaide but was benched for the third Test. Washington Sundar played the series opener while Ravindra Jadeja was the sole spin-bowling all-rounder in Gabba. R Ashwin will soon return home. India aren't expected to name his replacement.
Gabba Test ends in a draw
The third Test match between India and Australia in Gabba ended in a draw. Rain played an important role in deciding the result and very few overs were bowled on the final day.
The series is levelled 1-1 and the rest of the two matches are must-win for both teams. The action will now move to Melbourne, which will host the Boxing Day Test match from December 26 to 30. Adelaide will host the fifth Test match from January 3 to 7.
