Explained! How Can India Play World Test Championship Final After Draw Against Australia At GABBA? (Source: AP)

The 3rd Test between Australia and India at the GABBA ended as a draw. Australia dominated the Test, but rain came to India's aid as they escaped a defeat. The teams will now head to the 4th Test in Melbourne from December 26 with the series tied at 1-1.
The draw also kept India's chances of reaching the WTC final afloat. If India can win the following two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney, they will secure a berth in the WTC final. A 3-1 win in the series will take India's PCT to 60.5 and Australia won't be able to cross it even if they win the two Tests against Sri Lanka.
It won't be easy for India to beat Australia in two back to back matches so there are chances that the series could end as 2-2. In that case, things could get tricky for India as they would have to wait for other team results to qualify for the final. India would need Sri Lanka to beat Australia 1-0 to book a berth in the summit clash. If Sri Lanka beat Australia 1-0, India will have a PCT of 55.26 and Australia will have a PCT of 53.5. However, Australia are a brute force and they are expected to win at least a game in Sri Lanka. In that case, India would be knocked out.
India can also qualify for the WTC final if the Border-Gavaskar Series ends as 2-2 draw if Pakistan beat South Africa 2-0. In that case, South Africa will be left with a PCT of 52.57 and India will have a PCT of 55.25, thus securing a place in the WTC final. Australia will just need a draw on the Sri Lanka tour to qualify.
