'I've Thoroughly Enjoyed It': Emotional R Ashwin Bids Farewell To Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli After Retirement. (Photo: BCCI)
Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement has ended a glorious chapter in the Indian cricket. The 38-year-old finished his career as the second-highest Indian wicket-taker in Test matches.
Ashwin’s retirement announcement came just after the match was declared a draw amid continuous rain interruption throughout the day. The veteran off-spinner just played a single match taking one wicket in the pink ball Test match as Adelaide.
Ashwin’s imminent decision to retire means India will now have to choose between Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja if they opt to play a spinner in the remaining two Test matches.
In an emotional video shared by BCCI Ashwin reflected on his journey as the Indian cricketer and insisted he has enjoyed every bit of his decorated cricket career.
“I don’t know how to go about this honestly. It’s easier to speak in a team huddle. Even though I'm not exhibiting but it’s a truly emotional moment for me. Right now I’m feeling when I toured Australia back in 2011. Rahul bhai left, Sachin paji left. But trust me guys everybody’s time comes and today was truly my time.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it, built some great relationships and friendships over the last 4-5 years notably. I’m leaving behind some of my teammates who are playing dearly. Every passing year in the last four years I felt how much more I value their relationship and how much more I value them as a player. Had a great time, I will be taking a flight back home. But I will be tuned in to watch how well you guys do in Melbourne.
“The cricketer in me, as an Indian cricketer might have come to an end but the cricket nit in me will never come to an end. So I will be looking forward to each one of your performances and all the very best. If you guys need anything I’m just a call away. Thanks Rohit (Rohit Sharma), thanks Virat (Virat Kohli), thanks Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) bhai, so happy today."
