KL Rahul has certainly proved his critics wrong with another sublime innings in Brisbane. Rahul’s heroics once again turned out to be valuable as India managed to avoid follow-on on 4th day of the third Test at the Gabba.
If it wasn’t for Steve Smith’s excellent catch Rahul would have stayed at the crease for a few more minutes. Despite all the Indian top order including Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant crumbling, it was Rahul who held the fort alongside Ravindra Jadeja.
Rahul didn’t show any interest in gambling with deliveries outside the off stumps and relied on his instincts and techniques, which was evident throughout his innings. The 32 year old has now has accumulated over 200 runs in the ongoing India vs Australia series and has once again justified his selection with a fine 84 runs consisting of eight fours.
Sunil Gavaskar dissected Rahul’s batting and pointed out that his head position during his batting helped him to judge the balls more accurately. In an interaction with India Today the former Indian cricketer said, “He is very still at crease. There is a little trigger movement, but his head is upright, and that’s the reason why he is able to judge where the off-stump is, and leave those deliveries. And that is so essential. When the ball is hard and new, and bowlers are on top, you need to give them the respect for the first half-an-hour or 45 minutes, because the next 5 hours are yours."
Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah also chipped in with valuable runs as India ended the day four 252 runs on the board. With chances of rain and severe thunderstorms hovering for the last day, the visitors would be happy to play out a draw in this match.
