Despite England's humiliating 423-run defeat against New Zealand in the third Test at Seddon Park in Hamilton, Joe Root continued his red-hot form with the bat as he scored another half-century in the fourth innings of the match during the Ben Stokes-led team's attempt to chase down a massive target of 658.
While the visitors were bowled out for 234, Root gave them a ray of hope with a fluent knock of 54 as he notched up a 104-run partnership for the third wicket with Jacob Bethell. The youngster made 76 runs to mark a memorable debut series in which he played a key role in helping England win by a 2-1 margin.

Joe Root Creates History

Joe Root etched his name in history by becoming the first visiting batter to score 1000 runs in New Zealand. Root has played 12 matches in New Zealand and made 1006 runs in 22 innings at an average of 50.30 with three centuries to his name.

Root also broke Javed Miandad's record for the most runs in Test cricket by a batter against New Zealand. The former England captain has 1925 runs in 21 matches against the Black Caps, while the legendary Pakistan batter made 1919 runs in 18 matches in his legendary career for Pakistan.

The achievement comes just a day after Kane Williamson became the first player in history to score 5000 runs and 20 centuries in New Zealand.
As far as Root is concerned, he finishes the year with 1556 runs in 17 matches with six centuries. His run tally is the 7th highest by a cricketer in a calendar year in Test cricket history.
