Sunil Gavaskar lost his cool at Mohammed Siraj during India's first innings with the bat during the fourth day of play in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) at the Gabba following a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja that almost cost the Indian team severely as they were at risk of being asked to follow-on.
To the surprise of many, Siraj earned a promotion in the Indian batting and walked out to bat at number nine ahead of Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep following the dismissal of Nitish Kumar Reddy. Reddy and Jadeja's 50-run stand had given India hope of avoiding a follow-on.
In the 62nd over, Jadeja took a single on the fourth delivery as he attempted to farm the strike. While the expectation was that Siraj would try defending the remaining two deliveries, which would allow Jadeja to take strike on the first ball of the new over, he took a single on the fifth. After being sent back by the star all-rounder, the Indian pacer once again left his crease following an overthrow by Australia.
This time the Indian pair did complete the single, but Jadeja was far from pleased as the duo exchanged in a heated mid-pitch chat.
Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was left in disbelief by Siraj's actions and lashed out at his cricketing awareness while speaking on-air as the incident happened.
"Even now, in the middle of the crease, they are having a conversation. Siraj is having a conversation. What's going on over here? One ball is left in the over. All you've got to do is stick around. There is no run. It looks to be in a very casual manner. Look at that. There's got to be some cricketing awareness. You are a no.9 batter. You have to think about team. You cannot think of taking risky singles," said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
The incident proved costly for India, as Jadeja was unable to get a single on the last delivery, leaving Siraj to face the entire next over, which was bowled by Mitchell Starc. The 30-year-old lost his wicket on the last delivery of the over to leave India at major risk of being asked to follow on by Australia.
