  • England lost the third Test by 423 runs
  • England recorded their fourth worst defat
Despite winning a Test series on New Zealand soil for the first time since 2008, England ended the tour on an embarrassing note as they lost the third Test at Hamilton's Seddon Park by 423 runs to ensure the hosts avoided a whitewash.
The Tom Latham-led side came into the series on the back of a historic whitewash against India on Indian soil and with an outside chance of reaching the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) final. However, the Ben Stokes-led team registered emphatic victories by eight wickets and 323 runs, respectively which has put a chance of a second title in three editions beyond the Black Caps.

England's Unwanted First

The 423-run victory is New Zealand's joint biggest in their history, having also beaten Sri Lanka by the same margin in 2018 at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Overall, it is the 10th biggest victory margin (by runs) in Test cricket history.
This is England's fourth-worst defeat in history and the second time in 2024 they have lost by more than 400 runs after a 434-run defeat to India at Rajkot.
England has become the first team in Test cricket history to lose two Test matches in a year by a margin of more than 400 runs. There have been 15 instances of a team losing a match by more than 400 runs in Tests, but 2024 is the first time it has happened twice.
