Ace Australia batter Steve Smith on Tuesday bagged a blinder to dismiss a resolute KL Rahul, redeeming himself after having dropped the batter earlier in the day. Smith, one of the finest slip fielders, had put down a simple catch on the very first ball of the day's play, giving Rahul a reprieve on 33, which the batter took full advantage of and finished with 84 runs.
Australia skipper Pat Cummins bowled the perfect line early on Day 4 and induced a thick edge off Rahul's ba. Smith though let go of an easy chance that could have given Australia a massive breakthrough on the morning of the fourth day.
Throughout the first session, Smith appeared visibly disappointed by his missed chance and every time Rahul managed to eke out a boundary, it felt like the dagger went deeper into the Aussie's chest. But Smith redeemed himself with a brilliant catch in the slips to see the back of Rahul and put an end to his agony.
Although Rahul had added 50 more runs to his tally, Smith's catch to dismiss him came towards the end of the first session, delivering Australia a much-needed morale boost. Ace Australia spinner Nathan Lyon bowled a ball that spun from outside off-stump in the 44th over.
Rahul moved on to his back foot to play a cut shot despite not having much room to play it. It produced a thick edge and it felt like the ball would fly by the slip cordon. Watch the video here:
It was a brilliant take since Smith had very little reaction time to hold on to the travelling ball. The ball was also dipping downwards, making him not just time the jump perfectly but also go low enough to hold it.
Rahul was left shocked to find his resolute innings come to an end, as India went deeper into trouble.
