New Zealand's massive 423-run victory over England in the Hamilton Test was Tim Southee's final Test; Kane Williamson's future has also come under the scanner following his record-breaking century in the second innings.
Southee, New Zealand's second-highest wicket-taker in history, bid adieu to the longest format of the game after a career that saw him play 107 Tests and take 391 wickets. He is also fourth on the all-time list of batters with the most sixes in Test cricket, with 98 maximums to his name.
Southee and Williamson have shared a long journey as they were teammates in the 2008 U-19 World Cup for the Black Caps. The duo has also played their 100th Test together against Australia earlier this year. Southee replaced Williamson as New Zealand's Test captain and led the national team in 14 Test matches before stepping down from the top job ahead of the India tour.
On being asked about his future, Williamson refused to confirm he would play again for New Zealand in the whites. The 2021 World Test Champions are not scheduled to play any Test match for the next eight months. Their next assignment is a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe in July.
"It's so far away at the moment. "I'm just focussing on right now and getting through the rest of the summer really. There's a bunch of different cricket coming up, and Champions Trophy obviously, which is exciting. Yeah, just see how it goes... I love Test cricket. As you mention, there's not a huge amount of it for some time, such is the schedule,'' said Williamson in a press conference.
The former New Zealand captain refused to sign the New Zealand Cricket Board's central contract last year putting his future in doubt ahead of a new World Test Championship (WTC) campaign.
